A flexible metal structure

The slender Auxetic Pavilion at Japan’s Kyushu University is crowned by a flexible metal mesh whose regular perforations are reminiscent of traditional patterns in kirigami (a variant of origami). Its auxetic structure uses the plasticity of metal plates to create curved surfaces with as little material as possible.

Fascinating patterns

Auxetic structures have one feature in common: when they are stretched, they expand perpendicular to the direction of the stretch as well. One example of an auxetic structure is expanded Teflon. In Kyushu, the ratio of the incision pattern to the curved surface has undergone systematic research. The simulation calculates the ideal pattern for the desired plastic deformation. The opening rate varies from five to 50 %.

Biomimetic design

This transdisciplinary project, which intersects design and botany, was inspired by blossoms. There are many possible applications for curved auxetic surfaces; they can regulate solar influx as adaptive elements or aid in building ventilation. The effect is quite natural. The play of light and shade resembles sunlight falling through bushes and trees.
