Maiden voyage on Hyperloop
First Passengers Ride Pegasus, BIG’s High-Speed Capsule
With speeds approaching 1000 km/h, the Hyperloop could one day replace domestic flights. Hyperloop passengers hurtle through subterranean vacuum tubes in streamlined capsules on magnetic rails. What was once considered a utopian vision became reality on 8 November 2020: for the first time in history, two people tested the innovative, high-speed transportation form. However, they achieved a top speed of only 161 km/h (100 miles per hour). It was not possible to go any faster in the 500-metre experimental tube, which has a diameter of 3.30 m and has been built above-ground in the Nevada desert.
The passenger capsule, which is called Pegasus, was designed by the Danish architecture studio Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). BIG is also behind the design for the first Virgin Hyperloop certification centre, which is slated to begin construction in the US state of West Virginia in 2022.
