The Newt Hotel in Somerset has grown; Invisible Studio have enhanced the hotel ensemble in the south of England with a yoga studio of rammed earth. Previously, the architects had also realized the adjacent fitness studio as well as a pavilion devoted to bees.

After a long period of improvised yoga classes in the bee pavilion, the operators recognized the need for a dedicated building. This should be directly linked to the fitness studio in order to create a compact grouping for sports activities.
Rammed earth facade
The facade of the yoga studio – inspired by the fitness studio – is also built of rammed earth. Using this local material, which has a characteristic red hue, allows the building to fit into the natural surroundings. The roof is covered with metal shingles and forms a curved funnel towards the sky.

Interior with a view of the sky
Visitors use a central entrance to access the yoga studio, whose rectangular floor plan and central skylight emanate a spiritual atmosphere. Light enters the room via an 11-m-long roof window and guides visitors’ eyes towards heaven. The yoga classes can take place without the distractions of the outdoors.

The warm ambience is conveyed by the birchwood slats that clad the entire interior. All the necessary built-ins, such as shelving and a kitchenette, have been set into the wall to create a harmonious overall image. The kitchenette, which is of copper, has been set into the wooden interior so that yoga practitioners’ eyes remain focused on the sky above.
