Waterfall out of nowhere: Installation by Olafur Eliasson

Visitors to the Palace of Versailles can currently admire a giant waterfall – part of an exhibition of works by Olafur Eliasson – tumbling into the Grand Canal in the palace park. Seen from the front, the waterfall makes an impression of pouring from mid-air.     The mystery is solved when you walk round to the side, when a steel tower comes into view with piping that pumps water up to the top. The spectacular attraction already had New Yorkers thrilled back in 2008, when it was positioned in the East River. Not only the waterfall but also various other interventions and installations by Eliasson are on show at the palace until the end of October, when the exhibition comes to an end.
