Preview: Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024

The 62nd edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024 will kick off on 16 April under the motto: "Where design evolves". The events will bring together more than 1900 exhibitors, including 600 young talents under the age of 35 and 22 design schools. 

What's new at the Salone del Mobile?  

The layout of the individual areas is intended as a guide, a path that offers not only experience spaces but also rest and relaxation zones; there will be conferences and discussion panels with international guests. There will be immersive and interactive site-specific installations to familiarise visitors with the state of the art in the industry or to reflect on the physical and emotional value of interiors. The aim is to turn the fair into an open ecosystem that promotes dialogue and collaboration within the design community.  

Efficient routes, optimised layouts

To improve the visitor experience, the organisers have planned a new layout for the Salone del Mobile 2024. The redesigned floor plans were developed in collaboration with the Milan-based architecture firm Lombardini22 and a team of neuroscientists. The organisation is more open and user-friendly, the pavilions are arranged concentrically and the exhibition stands face outwards for better visibility. In addition, the routes in EuroCucina and the International Bathroom Exhibition have been redesigned to optimise visitor flows and make the best use of the available space.  

International bathroom exhibition  

Saving water will be the focus of the 2024 International Bathroom Exhibition, which has been held as part of the Milan Furniture Fair since 2006. Over 180 exhibitors will be presenting how functionality, wellness and aesthetics can be combined with sustainability in the bathroom over an area of 18,000 square metres. Both the EuroCucina and the International Bathroom Exhibition will be reorganised - for the first time with adjacent, interconnected pavilions. In this way, the Salone aims to ensure equal accessibility and visibility for all exhibitors. This will be achieved by moving away from the classic arrangement and redesigning the layout in a concentric form.

Current bathroom trends include intelligent fittings, touchless taps, customised shower systems and bathtubs with smart functions. Design is becoming increasingly individualised and integrated into living areas, with materials such as marble and wood emphasising the natural atmosphere.

Workspace 3.0

This year, Workspace 3.0 replaces Euroluce, which will not take place again until next year. Which furnishings help us to improve our professional, social and creative experiences? Workspace 3.0 takes a close look at today's workplace and presents solutions - with a view to the future.

Installations

There is cultural content within three exhibitions at the exhibition centre. Among them, "A Thinking Room" (Halls 5-7) is a contribution by film director David Lynch. It invites visitors to reflect on the function of interiors, which never fulfil purely decorative purposes, but are always also a projection of the person or persons who live in them.

Ethics, sustainability and technology, the power, fascination and flowing presence of water are the themes of "Under the Surface", an installation by Accurat, Design Group ltalia and Emiliano Ponzi for the International Bathroom Exhibition (Hall 10).

Founded and curated by Marva Griffin Wilshire, the springboard for young designers under 35 is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special edition of SaloneSatellite in pavilions 5 and 7 at the fairgrounds and a major exhibition in the city at Triennale Milano from 16 to 28 April 2024. The exhibition will illustrate how, in a quarter of a century characterised by major social, economic and environmental changes, the fair has always been able to provide valuable indications of the importance of innovation in the future thanks to the ingenuity and passion of its participants.
