Tradition Meets Modern: Rattan Chair by Cappellini

Photo: Cappellini

Attempts to invigorate the rattan industry have been underway for some time, but these have faltered again and again in the implementation of designs. Now, Jakarta designer Abie Abdilla of Studio Hiji has created a new chair for the Italian furniture label Cappellini. It makes a particularly modern, attractive addition to any possible setting.

Lukis is a good example of how traditional materials and manufacturing methods can be used to create sustainable, new and contemporary furniture. The seat and wings are made using a steam-bending process, while the frame of the chair is made of rubberwood. This is another good example of sustainability. Until recently, the wood of the trees from which latex is tapped was left to rot unused because of its lifespan and growth cycle of about 30 years before it can be harvested.
