The Toyo Ito Architecture Museum was completed: A museum dedicated to the architect’s Toyo Ito’s work - designed by himself.
The Japanese architecture office of Toyo Ito finished the design and construction of the Toyo Ito Architecture Museum situated on a site of about 6.300 m2 on the small island of Omishima, Japan overlooking the Seto inland sea.
The new museum consists of two structures – one a black steel structure that is playing with geometric figures called the Steel Hut and the other one, the Silver Hut, a vaulted pavilion recalling light-weight and prefabricated structures.
The Steel Hut has a floor area of about 170 m2 spread out over two floors in a multi-level system. It is designed as a steel frame and reinforced concrete structure featuring a matt steel sheeting skin. The Silver Hut is a two story structure and with a floor area of about 190 m2 almost of the same size as the steel hut.
The Steel Hut houses the works by the office of Toyo Ito, and Silver Hut is the relocated and rebuild house that Toyo Ito used to live. It is now used as a workshop space for children to learn and play with architecture.
Toyo Ito Architecture Museum is one of the rare museums worldwide that are dedicated o the work of an individual architect – and that have been in addition built by that architect himself.
