The current Touch Wood exhibition, which is taking place at the Center for Architecture Zurich (ZAZ), has positioned itself between practice and research. Both hands-on and visionary, the show examines the natural building material wood from many different perspectives and invites visitors to the 400 m² space to experience and discover the material as well as to rediscover the natural environment.

Over two levels and in ZAZ’s outdoor area, various topics will be presented. A particular highlight is the acoustic wall by Gramazio Kohler Research, ETH Zurich. Made of 1444 identical wooden blocks, the wall is 5.3 m long and 2.5 tall. The project combines parametric design with an innovative augmented fabrication system and is based on a pilot project that aims to unite architecture and acoustics.

The Mockups area shows innovative solutions that expand the range of applications for wood. For instance, new digital technologies enable the presentation of prototypes for round wooden pegs as connectors and the implementation of free-form projects.

Furthermore, visitors can trace the transformation process of wood from forest to architecture, and gain insight into current architectural activity in Switzerland. Around 60 models show that wood has caught on in all areas of application in architecture, including projects such as the kindergarten in Ittigen by Büro B Architekten, the Küng office building in Alpnach by Seiler Linhart Architekten and the furnace tower at the Ziegelei Museum in Cham by Boltshauser Architekten.

The exhibition and its accompanying publication Touch Wood – Material, Architektur, Zukunft are the result of independent research carried out by architects Carla Ferrer, Celina Martinez-Cañavate and Thomas Hildebrand in Zurich. Visitors can enjoy the exhibition until 30 October.
