The MPavilion initiative is hosting its seventh installation in Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Gardens. This season’s contribution is a bright, strikingly abstract design by Italian architects MAP Studio.

The colourful pavilion consists of a raised, cube-shaped steel framework that features a set of mirror-polished aluminum panels. Reflection and geometric abstraction will make the project a stage for constantly changing circumstances.

The panels serve as mirrors of human activities and, at the same time, as useful shading elements. The three-dimensional grid is borne by four U-shaped components of prefabricated concrete; these can also be used as seating.

The entire framework is based on a cuboid module with an edge length of 2 m. The prefab elements were conceived for temporary use: after the exhibition in Melbourne, the pavilion, which represents a contemporary and sustainable design, can easily be moved elsewhere.

The area beneath the artistic construction is an organically shaped, bright-yellow rubber surface that offers a comfortable base to make children’s play easier and safer. A small, round kiosk to one side of the pavilion enables not only the storage of moveable seating and service carts, it also provides flexible support for many different activities. With the Light Catcher 2021/22, the MPavilion initiative is celebrating its longest-ever program season: the meeting place is always popular and encompasses 400 personal events by a broad diversity of target groups and age categories.

MPavilion is an ongoing initiative of Australia’s Naomi Milgrom Foundation. Every year since 2014, the foundation has commissioned outstanding architects from around the world to design and realize a pavilion for Queen Victoria Park in Melbourne. The constantly changing pavilions serve as destinations for events, cultural exchange, workshops, installations and child-friendly experiences.
