Holiday Cabins on the Fjord: The Bolder by Snøhetta

For travellers, the Norwegian fjords count among the most attractive jewels of nature. With The Bolder, Snøhetta now offer a highlight on the edge of the cliff of Lysefjord, which is located on the west coast of Norway. In collaboration with entrepreneur Tom Bjarte Norland and the Danish home-decoration brand Vipp, the Norwegian architecture studio have designed four lodges that float above the ground and fit harmoniously into the landscape.

The cabins are known as Stylten, Myra, Stjerna and Eldhuset; their facades consist of untreated red cedar that will weather to a naturally greyed look over the course of time. Large glass windows enable an unobstructed view over the fjord and its craggy surroundings.
Set on large concrete piles, the cabins appear to float above the fjord. The effect of weightlessness is reinforced by the asymmetrical roof shape that repeats itself on the underside of the structure.

Interior
Each lodge features an upper level with kitchen and dining area, as well as a ground floor with bedroom and bathroom. The interior is dominated by natural materials, earthy tones and organic textures. The oakwood, which has been treated in various ways, ensures contrasts between light and dark. Minimalistic design and furniture of wood, marble and leather create a certain timeless elegance. A skylight and generous glass surfaces flood the inside of the cabins with daylight.

Visitors reach their holiday cabins directly via bridges of Corten steel. The complex is off the grid apart from the electricity required for lighting and operating the appliances. A treatment facility provides guests with natural spring water.
