New identity

The transport hub of Vltavská station in Prague shines in a new light. Colourful street sports installations by the architecture studios U/U Studio and Replace characterise the new image of the transit station. In the past, the public had tended to avoid the run-down urban space. The new elements now create a lively meeting place with a new identity.

Colourful open spaces
The underpass is divided into two sections. The northern one is colourfully designed and connects to outdoor areas. They offer space for events of all kinds as well as various sports. Whether it's a duel on the basketball court, climbing on the boulder wall or sitting together on the benches, the outdoor space is popular with the residents, especially in the summer.
Roofed skate park
In the southern part, the underpass opens up to the Vltava River and offers a covered skate facility with a view of the water, which can also be used in bad weather. In the changing play of light of the staggered structure, skaters and onlookers gather to practise their skate tricks between red ramps and suspended seats. The new red-painted elements are made of steel and concrete to ensure durability and easy maintenance.

Shared neighbourhood
A somewhat more inconspicuous feature is a piggy bank called Ollie, which stands at the entrance to the southern subway. Donations can be made for the homeless via a printed QR code. The message is clear: we are all an important part of society, we are all neighbours.

Small interventions achieve great things
The architectural offices have created a safe, shared space for street athletes, pedestrians and cyclists. Just one year after reactivation, the place has become a lively, graffiti-covered meeting place where events also take place throughout the year. The project is a successful example of how reuse can work in urban space.
