Spaces that Promote Exchange

The 75 employees and the two founders Michael Murphy and Alan Ricks work on social projects in the poorest regions of the world. “With every project we ask ourselves how our architecture contributes to people feeling comfortable,” explains Murphy. "We want to know how to improve the working environment to increase productivity and commitment, how to measure the latter and how we can design spaces that promote productivity and commitment," say the founders, explaining their approach to their new headquarters in Boston.
In a workshop with Herman Miller, MASS quickly realised that the layout of the rooms did not correspond to their own working methods. Based on the results of the workshop, the office restructured its work processes and designed the workplaces according to Herman Miller’s researchbased "Living Office" concept. The result is an open and communicative office landscape. "Investment in a spatial diversity that promotes human interaction was an important stimulus for our company," says Alan Ricks. The architects and designers work in Herman Miller’s Hive series. Those seeking peace and quiet can withdraw into the closed Haven conches which structure the space. The new focal point of the office is the light-flooded Plaza.
