Florian Idenburg and Jing Liu founded So-Il in New York in 2008. Hailing from the Netherlands and China, respectively, they met while working for SANAA in Japan. In 2013, Ilias Papageorgiou from Greece joined the practice as its third partner. SO-IL was widely recognized for its design of the MoMA PS1 exhibition pavilion in 2010. The architects are particularly interested in the development of unusual structures. This can be seen in their work on the Manetti Shrem Museum of Contemporary Art in Davis, California, whose gently curved roof creates a special play of light and shadow.
The Site Verrier de Meisenthal project concerns renovation and extension of the historical glassworks in a collaboration of Freaks Architects of Paris and the New York office SO-IL.
The north side of Brooklyn is currently undergoing transformation from an industrial area into a residential district. SO-IL's Amant, an Art Campus, where art is created and displayed, is providing an impulse for this shift.
