With this exhibition at the Hessenpark Open-Air Museum, the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) takes an instructive look at the qualities of rural architecture. The countryside is attracting increasing attention as a centre of life. It is a place to live and work; thus, it requires contemporary, ecological, social and constructive infrastructure.

The exhibition depicts 70 outstanding examples of European architecture, ranging from houses, to sports facilities, to public buildings, focusing on Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland. It addresses the topic of sustainable tourism, shows technological developments and examines the connection between the traditional and the contemporary. Moreover, it takes an extensive look at the repurposing and renovation of buildings.

The program will give a voice to the people who greatly influence locations and projects thanks to initiatives and participatory processes – from the town hall to the local architect, from the winemaker to the citizens themselves. In addition, the curators have closely examined the regions of the Black Forest and Thuringia, as well as the villages of Krumbach in Austria and Valendas in Switzerland, all of which have driven their overall development in particular ways.

The spectrum of the examples on display extends from smaller projects such as private houses and barn renovations to public buildings like community centres, schools and town halls. There are individual highlights, but absolutely no comprehensive “image of the countryside”, inventory or outlook for future developments.
