Recycled Pavilion in Almere

The Natural Pavilion, which was designed by DP6 Architectuurstudio for the 2022 Floriade garden show, consists of 95 % bio-based materials and renewable resources. It will now be repurposed as a centre for offices and conferences.

A broadly spanned roof construction
This three-level building could be viewed as part of the Floriade until 9 October 2022. It consists of cubic wooden modules with an edge length of 3,5 m that frame a central atrium and a planted shed roof fitted with a photovoltaic system. The Douglas-fir profiles of the supporting structure have the same narrow cross-section everywhere, even in the broad span of the roof construction. For the ceilings on the first and second upper levels, the architects used cross-laminated timber panels. The building rests entirely without concrete on wooden piles.
Wall coverings of organic materials
The approx. 800 steel nodes that hold the wooden modules together are made of recycled material, as are around 12,5 t of glass that have been fitted into the pavilion; the glass comes from a government building in The Hague.

Veritable eye-catchers in the building are the diverse wall coverings, which comprise an incredible variety of organic materials. These include flax and straw, but also an organic synthetic material made of pepper stalks, acoustic elements from mycelia, and cellulose from grass. Moreover, the wood-stand construction inside the walls consists of the frames of decommissioned roof windows.

A second life for the Floriade pavilion
In December 2022, it was determined that in future, the pavilion should remain in its place. In fact, the grounds of the Floriade are to become home to a new residential district and the Flevo Campus. The latter is a cooperative project shared by the City of Almere and the Province of Flevoland; it will involve local postsecondary institutions and research facilities. Scientists working here will examine questions surrounding food supply and urban agriculture.

To this end, the pavilion will be repurposed as an office building and conference centre that continues to demonstrate the potential of circular building using renewable resources.
