Recycled Furniture for the University

Linné University is located in Kalmar in the southeast of Sweden. Its campus has been redesigned by Tengbom and Christensen Arkitekter. The Leed Gold certified buildings include several new buildings, renovated existing buildings, a canteen and a library. During the planning process, it was natural that sustainable materials be selected, smart solutions be used to save energy, and furniture reused. Also important was that existing furniture unsuitable for direct reuse be sustainably handled. Using the example of height-adjustable tables, Kinnarps shows how existing furniture can be repurposed. The legs can often be reused unchanged and fitted with a custom table top. Other furniture items supply spare-parts for other recycled furniture. The remaining parts were disassembled and sorted by material type. Materials such as metals, plastics and textiles were sent for material recycling, while wood-based parts were converted into briquettes.
