Ecologically valuable
A different way of cohabitation: The Symbiotic Spaces Collective (SSC) has developed 3D-printed dwellings that, similar to an insect hotel, will provide housing for amphibians, insects, small mammals, and birds in water bank environments. SSC designer Laurin Kilbert received first place in the “Reconnecting with nature” category of the New European Bauhaus Awards.
Organic algorithms
Large surfaces store heat, which many amphibians and insects appreciate. The modular elements of the SSC dwellings were therefore based on organic algorithms to create large volumes with the greatest possible stability. Reminiscent of castles, the structures occupy the zone between water and land.

Natural environment
The location of the pilot project is the Hildesheim Amphibian Biotope. Clay sourced from the biotope will be used to 3D-print habitats for endangered species, such as the yellow-bellied toad and the great crested newt.

Symbiotic coexistence
According to Laurin Kilbert, the aim was to “make the complex interrelationships of our ecosystems visible”, showing their value to society. The project has been realized in collaboration with biologists from the nature conservation authority in Hildesheim, the designer Joana Schmitz, and the Hildesheim Biology Education Centre. It is the starting point for an interdisciplinary study that supports biotopes while exploring how humans and endangered species can live together in the future.
