Cars, whilst ever popular, will always take second place to flight. Who does not crave to soar on the wing unencumbered by white painted lines, coloured traffic lights and grey roads?
For a moment, this sculpture, by artist
Gerry Judah, envisions cars as jets - complete with vapour trails. It captures an emotional craving for power and speed.
The sculpture, for the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed in England, was commissioned by Porsche GB to celebrate 50 years of the Porsche 911. The models featured are: the 1963 original 911, the 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7, and the 2013 911.
Each leg of the sculpture is a pure monocoque made from welded steel plate, and without any internal structure. This approach keeps the structure relatively light-weight and helps to ensure the dramatic curves are clean of line.
With a glorious blue sky, it is not a sculpture to make you think, but something that appeals to purer, primordial emotion.
