Søren Pihlmann studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 2009 to 2014. After completing his studies, he entered into self-employment, initially partnering with Kim Lenschow to form Lenschow & Pihlmann. He now leads Pihlmann Architects where he prioritises a refined sensitivity to materials over spectacular forms. Pihlmann selects materials based on their functional qualities, achieving a cohesive aesthetic in his projects. This philosophy is evident in House 14a in the Copenhagen suburb of Hellerup. Describing his approach, Pihlmann explains, “We try to question the general impression of architectural significance, looking instead for value in what may seem insignificant.” In 2025, he will curate the Danish Pavilion at the Architecture Biennale in Venice, presenting a concept that includes the pavilion’s renovation alongside the exhibition.
From the outside, the house from the 1950s has changed very little. Inside, Pihlmann Architects and art historian Marianne Krogh have created open, flowing spaces.
