Our Favourites: The Best Projects 2021

At the end of the year, we present the three best projects of 2021 that have convinced our editorial team in every respect. A footbridge in Cornwall, the Paddenbroek education center west of Brussels, and a pile dwelling in the middle of the nature of southern Sweden integrate harmoniously into the surrounding landscape and set unique accents in their environments.

Dramaturgy at the Chasm: Footbridge at Tintagel-Castle

The new footbridge by Ney & Partners and William Matthews Associates blends in harmoniously with the jagged rocky landscape of the Cornish coast. The modified form of an arched supporting structure stages the legend-shrouded Tintagel site with a spectacular gap at the bridge’s middle.

A Cultural Greenhouse: Paddenbroek Education Centre by Jo Taillieu Architecten

For the Paddenbroek Education Centre, which is located west of Brussels, Jo Taillieu Architecten surrounded an old orchard farmhouse with a construction of steel and glass.

Sleeping Above the Wildlife: House on Piles in Southern Sweden

Sandellsandberg’s aim was to create the illusion of a dissolving house disappearing into nature. However, this illusion is no mere gimmick: it will enable guests to safely spend the night amid wild animals.
