Alteration and repurposing are as old as architecture itself. In times of climate crisis and scarce resources, reactivating the culture of modifying existing building stock has become more important than ever before.
The construction and building sector – the source of 40 % of global greenhouse gases – can make a necessary and sustainable contribution in this respect through adaptive reuse of existing buildings.

Although conversion and refurbishment already account for two-thirds of construction work in Germany, the architectural and ecological potential of repairing and adapting buildings is still far from exhausted, with demolition and rebuilding still taking place in many cases. The resources already used for construction, the 'grey energy' and the values the buildings have come to embody are frequently not taken into account.

Divided into six thematic constellations, the "Adaptive Architecture – Building upon the Existing" exhibition showcases contemporary international examples that draw attention with their ingenious and creative approach to existing architecture. The exhibition's furnishings and fixtures also reflect the theme of "Adaptive Architecture", with reusable furniture, gallery partition walls and technical equipment all stemming from the inventory of the German Architecture Museum.
