New Plans for a Waterfront Stadium
A second design for the new 36,000-seat waterfront stadium for Portsmouth Football Club designed by Swiss Architects Herzog & De Meuron has been released. The stadium will be designed at a new location further from the adjacent naval base.
The proposed plan costs over £600 million pounds and includes an indoor space with 10,000 seats for concerts, exhibitions and indoor sporting events. Also included in the proposal is a new naval diving and training facility.
Residential and retail elements of over 90,000sq m of waterfront apartments, restaurants, cafés, leisure facilities, and a large public space are proposed to occupy the site of the club's old home at Fratton Park, 7ha.
This is Herzog & De Meuron’s fourth stadium design after the Basel stadium, the Munich Allianz Arena, and Beijin’s Olympic Stadium.
If planning approval is obtained, construction on the stadium is likely to begin in 2010.
