MVRDV and Het Nieuwe Instituut Open The Podium

Until 30 June 2022, this year’s Rotterdam Architecture Month festival will take place under the motto Vista Rotterdam!. More than 100 architecture-related events will address the significance of design in the transforming city. The exchange of ideas among visitors, educational institutions and representatives of the design field will take centre stage.

The temporary installation The Podium, which was designed by MVRDV and now graces the roof of Het Nieuwe Instituut is the heart of the grounds. The stage, which stands 29 m high in gleaming pink, offers space for the events surrounding the architecture festival in Rotterdam. Subsequently, The Podium will serve from 1 July to 17 August as a stage for concerts and other cultural happenings.
Program
The main exhibition (T)Huis (House/Home) questions the future of living with 30 different projects. It was designed and curated by Namelok. On 12 June, the highlight of the program will be a conference in honour of architecture critic Hans van Dijk (1948-2021); this event will discuss the relevance and future of architectural criticism. Among others, contributors will include Rem Koolhaas, Tom Avermaete and Anne Kockelkorn. Activities like the Grand Rotterdam Architecture Quiz will offer a playful way to become acquainted with the city’s architecture (and architectural history).

The Podium
The Podium by MVRDV, which is on the roof of Het Nieuwe Instituut, can be reached via an enormous outdoor stairway with 143 steps. The vivid shade of pink accentuates its function as a central meeting point. Scaffolding material and recyclable floor coverings have been used in order to make the temporary installation as sustainable as possible.

The venue features barrier-free access via a lift. As a counterpart to The Podium, MVRDV designed the Rotterdam Rooftop Walk: 30 m above the ground, orange-coloured paths lead visitors above the buildings and demonstrate the potential of roofs as design elements.
