Reinforced-concrete building
Like a Stack of Paper
The solid, reinforced-concrete building that stands in the centre of Göttingen’s Old Town surpasses its historical neighbours in terms of both height and volume. With its steep roof and protruding floors, the Kunsthaus gallery borrows typical details from the context of Göttingen’s historical building tradition and reinterprets them in a contemporary way. The combed modelling plaster pays tribute to the surface treatment of the warehouses and depots in the surrounding area. Inside, the concrete surfaces have been left rough. They interact with the polished floor screed to convey a workshop character.
Atelier ST has been operated jointly by Silvia Schellenberg-Thaut and Sebastian Thaut since 2005. With their small, yet excellent team they carry out challenging projects of various scales. The Leipzig architecture studio concentrates on buildings devoted to art and culture as well as high-quality residential structures.
We feature this project in Detail 1/2.2022 and in our databank Detail Inspiration.
