Light work: Silo 468, Helsinki by Lighting Design Collective.

The Madrid based Lighting Design Collective, LDC, brought a touch of warmth and passion to Helsinki this year, with their sensuous work for the Silo 486 project. It formed part of the Helsinki World Design Capital 2012, but has quickly become a compelling experience for visitors and locals alike. The building was originally an oil silo that had fallen into disuse before it was revived with the light installation. It is 36m in diameter and 17m high. The installation has 1250 LEDs and inside, uses a background of red light with changing patterns of white light that suggest a flock of birds. The combination creates a special and unexpected atmosphere. External view. Detail of light dots. Interior light detail. Interior image. Interior image. Detail of leds. Light show.
