Cultural Centre in Ptuj on the Drava by Elementarna

Ptuj on the Drava river is Slovenia’s oldest city. It is also home to a very lively cultural scene. The architectural office of Elementarna transformed a former glass factory in the medieval town centre into a cultural centre. Organised on an L-shaped plan, the small scale building structure seamlessly fits into the historic context. The urban regeneration project also led to the redesign of the bordering alleys and plazas. 

As a result of demolishing of the building wings, the entrance area of the new cultural centre opens towards the streetscape. An exposed concrete wall with a serrated surface separates the interior courtyard from the streetscape. The wall design is inspired by a theatre curtain. At the same time, the wall constitutes the lateral ground floor facade of the new structure, housing a large event hall covered by a gable roof. The folding glass door elements of the event space permit opening the facade completely towards the interior courtyard. The southern part of the interior courtyard features seating that is reminiscent of an amphitheatre. The space can be used as an auditorium for open air events.

To major degrees, aside from exposed concrete, the building envelope is defined by expanded metal panels with red coating. They are present in the gable end of the new building and the longitudinal wing. The latter is two storeys tall and features a direct connection to the event space. It houses a hall with a vaulted ceiling. Further vaulted spaces from the 17th century are accessible below grade. The existing building fabric bordering the street was restored in coordination with historic preservation authorities and integrated into the functional concept.

The newly created ground floor area is oriented to the courtyard and serves as the main entrance for guests and visitors of the cultural centre. Its foyer also doubles as a small event space. Just like the large event hall, the French folding doors permit completely opening the facade, creating flowing transitions between the interior and the courtyard. The upper floor displays a facade comprising a homogeneous filter layer with expanded metal elements, some of which can be opened. They enclose rooms while also providing protection from views and the sun.
