Kenneth Frampton, an English architect as well as an historian and theoretician of architecture, has won a lifetime achievement award in the form of the Golden Lion at the 16th Architecture Biennale in Venice. Frampton studied at London’s Architectural Association (AA); he moved to the USA in the 1960s. He has been teaching at Columbia University in New York since 1972.

Frampton is one of the most prominent champions of modern architecture. The renowned theoretician’s most important publications include Modern Architecture: A Critical History, which appeared in 1983. In this book, Frampton’s thorough examination of the concept of critical regionalism has lost none of its currency even today.

The curators of the 16th Biennale, Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, recommended Frampton to the board because “His humanistic philosophy in relation to architecture is embedded in his writing and he has consistently argued for this humanistic component throughout all the various ‘movements’ and trends…in architecture in the 20th and 21st century.”

The awards ceremony will take place in Venice on the occasion of the opening of the Architecture Biennale on Saturday, 26 May 2018.
