Bespoke Wool Rugs in a Boutique Hotel

In the heart of Lisbon, a luxurious wine hotel has recently opened: the Palácio Ludovice. João Federico Ludovice, the architect of the Portuguese king João V, built the house as a private residence for himself at the beginning of the 18th century. After his death in 1752, the house underwent changes in both owners and functions. The palace has now been transformed into a boutique hotel featuring 61 rooms and suites. Architect and designer Miguel Câncio Martins has taken up the building’s history and preserved the original blue-and-white tiles as well as the frescos and stucco ceilings.

With bespoke Colortec rugs from the Ege Carpets design house, Martins sets fine, fresh accents with local colouring. In designing the approximately 600 m² of custom-made rugs of pre-dyed wool, he was inspired by the vineyards and slopes of the Douro. The yarn, which is of 100 % extra-long, durable new wool fibres from sheep in Great Britain, creates a special look and a warm, soft feel. The yarn is dyed before the rugs are made, resulting in a clear, saturated colour image.

Colortec is an elaborate process developed at Ege Carpets. It makes it possible to custom-make any carpet according to the customer’s wishes. Any pattern, shape or colour is possible. To achieve the desired design, a computer program calculates both the production route and the exact use of the yarn. Thanks to Colortec, any carpet can be an exclusive signature product that tells the story of a house or client. Along with 3D views, large-format paper printouts and small prototypes made from the original material aid in visualizing the proportions and positioning of the patterns.

Platinum-Ranking für Nachhaltigkeit

The width of the carpet can be adapted during production. This reduces waste while minimizing cost and laying time. Ege offers two standard widths (4 and 5 m) and any width over 300 cm in order to match the size of the room as precisely as possible. Prefabricated cuttings and skirting boards shorten the carpet-laying time for rooms and corridors in hotels and on-board cruise ships. EcoVadis, a ratings agency for sustainability, has distinguished Ege with the greatest number of points in its class: the Platinum ranking sets the company alongside the best one per cent.
