Cooperative apartment buildings in Barcelona tend to be small and represent a mere drop in the ocean when it comes to relieving the local housing crisis. However, the municipal government now supports the co-op philosophy and leases building lots to cooperative associations. An example is the lot occupied by La Chalmeta, for which a 75-year lease was signed in order to build subsidized flats.

Communal use
Pau Vidal and Vivas Arquitectos have created 32 apartments whose conceptualization and design arose in close dialogue with future residents, who expressed that communal areas were particularly important to them.

Consequently, the ground floor is home to shared spaces grouped around two inner courtyards: a fitness room, a kitchen with dining table and a laundry room as well as several multipurpose rooms and co-working spaces.

Stacked apartments
The apartments are stacked in one building section with eight storeys and one with four. Their tiered design ensures that sufficient daylight enters all the flats. The long pergolas on two sides of the structure serve not only as access, but as balconies and meeting places as well. On the fifth upper level, they lead to the planted roof of the four-storey section, which is used as a communal terrace.

Light and air
The flats are bright and open; their spaces are more or less of equal size and have not been designated any particular function. They can be joined as needed. All the one-to-three-room apartments face the road and inner courtyard and can be cross-ventilated – a vital consideration, for the spaces can be kept cool without switching on the air conditioning.

Furthermore, a good energy balance is ensured thanks to biological building materials and the co-op’s connection to the municipal network, which generates and distributes ecological energy for heating and hot water.
