The Czech city of Brno honours Gregor Mendel with a contemporary replica of his greenhouse. The new building will be used for exhibitions and events.
In memory of Gregor Mendel
The Augustinian monk Gregor Mendel (1822–1884) is considered the father of modern genetics. His laws of heredity are an integral part of biology lessons in many countries. For eight years, Mendel experimented with pea plants in the greenhouse of the Augustinian Abbey in Brno to develop the laws named after him. In the 1870s, when Mendel was elected abbot, the greenhouse was destroyed in a storm and was never rebuilt. It was not until the 200th anniversary of the birth of the city's most famous son that architects Chybik + Kristof erected a contemporary reinterpretation of the greenhouse on the historic site.

Lightweight steel and glass structure
The steel and glass structure is covered by a massive monopitch roof. Mendel's Laws, in particular the rule of segregation or division, were also the formal inspiration for the supporting structure with its crossed steel cables. External awnings on the roof allow the interior to be shaded as required. The building houses a permanent exhibition on Gregor Mendel and is also used for conferences and lectures. A heat pump ensures a comfortable indoor temperature.
