Floating Trees: Urban Installation in Rotterdam

Dobberend Bos, or floating forest, is the name of this installation by the Mothership artists’ collective. It will be unveiled mid-March in Rijnhaven, the harbour of the Dutch city of Rotterdam. Twenty trees, set into buoys, will add a bit more green to the urban landscape.  The inspiration for this project was Jorge Bakker’s In Search of Habitus. Bakker is known for using his works to address the subject of neglected elements in our surroundings. In Search of Habitus features an aquarium in which small model trees grow. Mothership took up the idea and made a test run last year with a single sapling. The prototype has now grown into full-sized tree. The floating forest will be built sustainably using the materials available: twenty recycled buoys now support the trees.  This innovative project is meant to provoke dialogue concerning how to bring more green back into urban space.
