Floating Sauna

In the harbour of Tromsø in Norway, sauna builder Pust has constructed a floating, publicly-accessible sauna together with Skapa Architects and furniture maker Ekte. For the terrace, facade and roof, Pust installed more than 1000 shingles made of modified Monterey pine. For this purpose, Norwegian wood specialist Kebony impregnated the wood with furfuryl alcohol, which is obtained from agricultural plant waste. The subsequent heating causes a polymer to form in the cell structure of the wood. The result is a weather-resistant, dimensionally-stable, non-splintering material with cell walls that are permanently reinforced by 50 %. According to Kebony, the patented technology transforms soft woods such as pine into resilient sustainable products that rival hard tropical woods.
