The European Commission and Europa Nostra, the leading network for historical preservation in Europe, have recently announced the victors in the European Prize for Cultural Heritage: 29 winners from 17 different countries have received the Europa Nostra Award 2018. “Our Award winners are living proof that our cultural heritage is far more than the memory of our past”, asserted Plácido Domingo, opera singer and President of Europa Nostra. From 160 submissions, the jury selected winners in the categories Conservation, Research, Dedicated Service and Education.
The restoration project for Dr. Barner’s Sanatorium, located in Braunlage in the Harz, was carried out by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin and is among this year’s prize winners. The sanatorium was distinguished in the category Conservation. The original Jugendstil building designed by architect and designer Albin Müller in 1914 still serves as a clinic for psychosomatic medicine.
The project, a cooperative effort with the Lower Saxony Office for Historical Preservation and Hildesheim’s University of Applied Sciences and Arts, encompassed not only the restoration of the original building, but also the re-creation of additions to the construction and individual historical rooms.
The awards ceremony will take place on 22 June 2018 in Berlin.
