De Zwarte Hond
Jurjen van der Meer and Thon Karelse founded their architectural practice in Groningen in 1985. Over the years, they expanded by opening branches in Rotterdam in 1992 and Cologne in 2011. Today, De Zwarte Hond (the black dog) employs around 120 people who work in architecture, urban development, and strategic planning. The firm is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach, often starting with the BIM model, and its expertise in managing complex, lengthy projects. This proficiency is showcased in their many award-winning projects, like the SuperHub shopping centre in Meerstad, the Zuidplein theatre in Rotterdam, and the train station in Assen. Recently, in Amsterdam, they completed a regional headquarters for the energy network operator Alliander. At eight storeys, it stands as one of the largest timber buildings in the Netherlands.
