A Hong Kong Chinese human rights organisation, the “Society for Community Organisation” (SoCO), has commissioned a series of photographs of overcrowded living spaces in the city. The results show the shocking living conditions that some individuals are forced to endure in order to survive.
The photographic commission was in response to a piece that appeared in the Economist, a business and economics publication, which in 2012 rated Hong Kong as the world's most liveable city. SoCO point out that the article did not appear to consider the plight of around 100,000 people living in just 4 square metres in what are known as “cubicle apartments”. Such spaces are created by subdividing already small apartments into multiple rooms.
