Radical renewal of a carriage house

With targeted yet radical alterations, Buchner Bründler Architekten have made inhabitable an old carriage house in the middle of Basel. The main focus of this project was letting daylight into the interior spaces.

For the prescribed design theme "Living with a View", Buchner Bründler Architekten developed a striking high-rise.

Both indoor and outdoor walls show the textural imprint of longitudinal wooden shuttering, and even some of the fixtures are cast in concrete.

The quietude and rusticity that reign here inspired Buchner Bründler Architekten to transform a 200-year-old stone house into a holiday home.

As the centrepiece of the newly designed neighbourhood outside of St. Johann, in the north of Basel, the powerful Volta-Zentrum’s exposed concrete building is a stand-out landmark in the city.
