Composite Brass Panel

A facade of changing brass tones is the trademark of a new shopping centre in the immediate vicinity of Wuppertal-Elberfeld railway station. Düsseldorf-based architect Yvonne von Salm from Chapman Taylor developed the facade concept of brass composite panels together with the Cologne-based facade builder Pohl. The sandwich elements were first pre-sanded by vibration, then burnished and, after final sanding, varnished to preserve the surface. In addition, some of the facade panels have been punched with square holes. The undulating shape of the building resembles pleats in a fabric, thereby establishing a connection to the city’s history. The textile traders’ street, “Hofaue”, is located in the immediate vicinity of the new building, from where textile products were sold all over the world until the 1960s.
