Already today, urban and individual spaces and public and private spheres are no longer clearly separated from each other, but are differentiated in a variety of ways. Institutions and buildings are opening up, processes are becoming participative, and sharing and shared places have become buzzwords of our time. What does this mean for urban environments? Which new forms of housing are needed? How can unfamiliar environments become temporary homes? How will the urban living spaces of a cosmopolitan society develop in the future?

In recent months, public keynote lectures, an internal expert workshop, a semester assignment for architecture students at the Technical University of Munich and an innovative Urban Community Lab have highlighted the topic of co-living on a spatial, social and technological level as well as from the perspective of the individual, the community and – now in the final stage – the city. The aim is to take all levers into account and use an innovative building concept and programme to transform a community of convenience into a real community. The reason for these considerations is the construction of the Munich Urban Colab in Munich's Creative Quarter by UnternehmerTUM and the State Capital of Munich. Starting in 2020, start-ups, corporate innovators, scientists and creative minds from all over the world will work together here on intelligent technologies and services for the city and future living. In order to make the new innovation campus attractive for entrepreneurs, it is also imperative to think about innovative living space that can be temporarily made available to the participants.

Which developments will influence our cities and especially Munich in the future? Which spaces with added value – both structurally and conceptually – can be created for Munich residents and urban nomads? And how can Munich profit from this versatility? All these questions will be considered holistically as social, economic, process-related, technological and digital factors. What connections and interfaces to the city do urban nomads need? And what perhaps is still needed in Munich to create places with cultural diversity for new and creative lifestyles?
