A marketplace for culture
Chungnam Art Museum by UNStudio
In South Korea’s Chungnam province, a new art museum is to be realized according to plans prepared UNStudio. Chungnam, a province in the extended vicinity of Seoul, is one of the country’s wealthiest areas. The new city of Naepo, which lies north of the provincial capital of Hongseongeup, is currently being developed as an administrative centre. The project will create many cultural institutions as well as residential, commercial and industrial districts. The new Chungnam Art Museum will form part of an informal boulevard that links it with other buildings with cultural functions. As a central element in the pathway system, this “cultural boulevard” will continue in the two-storey cubature of the museum building before flowing into an atrium that will rise over several plateaus, ultimately leading to a generous rooftop terrace. In the video, Astrid Piber and Ben van Berkel elucidate the significance of the museum as a place for exploratory interactions between art and the public.
