Ceramic facade for a school building by Wienerberger

Using fired clay as their material, the architects make reference to the earlier facing bricks of the stair tower, while the light grey colour is a nod to the concrete. The idea of a mineral surface that will retain a strong visual impression even under the influence of intensive weathering due to its fired ceramic colour in light grey has been retained. The panels were fixed to a horizontal aluminium substructure, which has 180-mm-thick mineral-wool insulation. The calm and even joint pattern of the parapets has been supplemented on the staircase by the architects with smaller Argeton Terzo 2 ceramic panels measuring 200x690mm in size. Two dummy joints per Terzo 2 panel create a striking horizontal layering on the staircase. This arrangement also set the rhythm for the staircase windows. Although these remain in their original position, they have been optically integrated into the facade with Barro 50x50mm bar tiles mounted horizontally on gaps in front of them.  www.wienerberger.de
