Snøhetta
Snøhetta, the international office for architecture and brand design, pursues a concept of flat hierarchies and joint design work. The team, consisting of architects, landscape architects, interior and graphic designers, researchers and artists, is based on a vision of interdisciplinary collaboration. Founded in 1989 by Kjetil Thorsen together with Craig Dykers and Christoph Kapeller, the office was named after the Norwegian Mount Snøhetta. An international competition they won in the same year brought the practice its first large commission: the reinterpretation of the great Library of Alexandria in Egypt. Roughly a decade later, this was followed by a further cultural development with an associative built form, namely the opera house in Oslo, which has won many international awards. The idea of a publicly accessible roof landscape rising out of the waters of the fjord is symbolic of Snøhetta’s awareness of the close relationship between architecture and the surrounding landscape.
