Building without barriers
According to the author there are three terms that define barrier-free building: reachability, accessibility and usability. For reachability, the crossing of public, semi-public and private space is particularly important. Easy transitions, wheelchair-friendly doorways and suitable surface materials are key when it comes to accessibility. Lastly, the natural use of barrier-free entrances and rooms comes under usability, as well as how this can be improved, for example with the creation of the revised DIN 18040 barrier-free building.
