This new parkade in the Dutch city of Zwolle is a real eye-catcher. The façade of light-coloured brick is decked with various ornaments that cast a fine shadow in sunlight. The ornamentation recalls both the Expressionist experiments of the 1920s and the famous buildings of the Amsterdam School.
The neo-Expressionist parkade is part of a revitalization project which will also include a 1,500-seat cinema, a supermarket and apartment buildings. The redevelopment of the Katwolderplein, which is located between the highway and the city centre in the western area of Zwolle, aims to create a better connection between the Kamperpoort district and the centre of town.
The structure forms a bridge between the Katwolderplein, the Pathé cinema and the old town centre. 700 parking spots are accommodated over six storeys. The roof is home to solar collectors, and there are 28 charging stations for electric vehicles.
