In Santiago de Compostela, Spanish architecture office Estudio Herreros are planning a railway station with a pedestrian overpass. The new transport hub will create a connection between the city’s centre and southern district. Since the railway line was built around 100 years ago, the tracks have divided the city into two zones. The first building phase of the Intermodal Station represents an infrastructure project that will link the district to the south with the historical centre of Santiago with a bridge.

The structure will extend over the rails and function as both a passenger terminal and an urban development. A network of stairways, escalators and lifts will connect the railway platforms to the streets and paths on both sides of the city via a pedestrian overpass.

In the upcoming, second phase of the project, the northern Plaza de la Estación and the Plaza de Clara Campoamor opposite will add public squares on both sides of the station. Moreover, a new station will subsequently be built for high-speed trains; this will function not only as a railway station, but also as a transport hub for bus and taxi traffic.

While the railway-station building widens towards the city centre as it gently guides passengers in that direction, at the other end of the overpass it narrows to a rather tower-like volume. This balances the difference in level to the lower-lying residential areas and displays the name of the station on its façade.

The planning team have set the new building on prefabricated concrete supports. The bridge, which rests on these supports, is covered with a light structure of gold-coloured expanded metal. Trussed girders in dark green serve as a subconstruction for the translucent grid of steel sheeting. This, the glazing and polycarbonate work together to give the infrastructure building a functional look with an industrial touch.
