Hardwald Observation Tower in Switzerland

With the observation tower in the Hardwald forest in Switzerland, the architecture firm Luna Productions has created a contemporary symbol of circular timber construction. The innovative structure is made entirely of wood from the local forest.  

Observation tower made from local timber

The Hardwald is a popular destination for locals and tourists due to its location in the growth area of Zurich. The construction of an observation tower was intended to enhance the local recreational programme and provide a new landmark for the surrounding communities. The Swiss architecture firm's timber structure won the competition.

Dynamic structure

The 41.5 m high central observation tower rises above the forest canopy and is a landmark visible from afar. The original design and the semi-open toothed lamella formwork create different views and changing light inside depending on the viewpoint, giving the structure a dynamic effect.

Diverse materials 

With the exception of the foundations and necessary structural components, the viewing platform is made of 380 m³ of timber. The eight different types of wood available locally were used according to their load-bearing capacity and weather resistance, which meant that almost no glued timber was used. A long service life is also guaranteed thanks to constructive wood protection and replaceable facade timbers.

Minimal impact

The structure is anchored to the forest floor with 16-point foundations, which the architects claim minimises the sealed surface area to just 1.8 m². The structure consists of four identical elements, each 10 m long and twisted in relation to each other, whose basic element is the equilateral triangle. By repeating the components and connections, it was possible to pre-assemble a large part of the structure, reducing the use of heavy machinery and eliminating the need for high scaffolding.

Closed cycle 

The observation tower is more than just a tourist attraction in the Hardwald forest. It provides a point of orientation and a place to stay for people and for the various species of animals that can nest in the open formwork. The trees of the forest continue to exist in another form, closing the circle.
