Atelier Kempe Thill
Designing flexible, cost-effective buildings that are both specific and innovative – this contradictory demand on contemporary architecture is a driving force in the work of André Kempe and Oliver Thill. The German natives from the state of Saxony founded their architectural studio in Rotterdam in 2000. Their first project to gain international attention was the Hedge Building pavilion for the 2003 International Garden Exhibition in Rostock. They have since built numerous public buildings as well as homes and schools in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France. In 2005 and 2009 Atelier Kempe Thill were among the winners of the Detail Prize. Since 2017 André Kempe and Oliver Thill have been teaching Civic Design at the Peter Behrens School of Architecture in Düsseldorf. A recent example of their cost-effective building approach is their makeover of two apartment blocks in the Rozemaai district of Antwerp.
