The design possibilities that photovoltaics and solar thermal energy systems can offer architecture are demonstrated by the winners of the Architecture Award for Building-Integrated Solar Technology, who were announced at the end of 2022.

An eight-storey administrative building with a finely textured glass shell that gleams in silver-black even as it generates electricity. A plus-energy house covered in matte-black photovoltaic modules from ridge to base. An apartment block whose red solar roof, at first glance, is indistinguishable from the surrounding tile roofs. These are just three of the 121 projects submitted by architects and manufacturers to the architecture competition. Since 2000, the Bavarian Association for the Promotion of Solar Energy has been organizing the competition, which took place for the ninth time in 2022.
Focus on solar facades and renovation projects
The jury awarded one first and five second prizes as well as an award for the best student-based project. In addition, eight non-endowed recognition awards were conferred. The clear, outstanding victor here was Basel’s new Office for the Environment and Energy by Jessenvollenweider, which we presented in Detail 11.2022. In this case, Swiss manufacturer Megasol supplied the photovoltaic modules – a bespoke creation with highly efficient, monocrystalline cells and a rough glass-enamel surface.

Second prizes went to Neutelings Riedijk for the Gare Maritime in Brussels (Detail 11.2021), Zurich architect Nadia Vontobel for a winter energy-plus house in Poschiavo, Burckhardt + Partner for updating the Coop HQ high-rise in Basel, and Lund + Slaatto for the Portalen office building in the Norwegian city of Drammen.

In all these projects, the solar-power systems were (also) integrated into the facades; this is no coincidence, for the architecture competition has always aimed to demonstrate that solar technology does not have to be hidden away on the (flat) roof. The prizewinning building projects, which included several renovations, were conspicuous in their diversity – proof that solar-power systems can be integrated into structures of almost any kind.

The winning project in the student-based competition had a particularly experimental character. For the Solar Decathlon Europe 2022 in Wuppertal, the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences (HfT) realized a demonstration building featuring a veil of rhombic photovoltaic modules and climbing plants. Two further contributions to the Solar Decathlon won special recognition: Haus MIMO by the University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf and the Roofkit Project by Karlsruhe’s Institute of Technology (KIT).
