The integration of solar-power systems into buildings is not only a technical task, but a design-related one as well. For the ninth time, the Architecture Prize for Building-Integrated Solar Technology will be conferred for the most successful examples. The award is endowed with a total of 27 000 euros.

The award documents from the Bavarian Association for the Promotion of Solar Energy [Solarenergieförderverein Bayern or SeV], which is organizing the competition, state: “The use of solar energy on buildings is a crucial topic on the path to climate neutrality. Solar-technical systems should be obvious components in innovative building shells as well as building blocks in energy-related refurbishment”

All architects, owners, operators and solar technology companies from around the world with at least one solar system that represents a significant component of a particular building are eligible to participate. It makes no difference whether it is photovoltaics, a solar thermal system or a combination of the two. The system launch – meaning the verifiable first energy supply from the system – must have taken place between 1 January 2019 and 30 June 2022.

The deadline for submissions to the competition is 31 July 2022. The first prize is endowed with 15 000 euros, while a further 10 000 euros have been allocated to recognition awards and 2000 euros have been set aside to distinguish a student project. Furthermore, the selected projects will be displayed in a travelling exhibition and a variety of publications. The award documents can be downloaded at sev-bayern.de or can be requested from the SeV.

The Bavarian Association for the Promotion of Solar Energy was established in 1997 as a non-profit organization in order to let the earnings from the 1-MW photovoltaic system on the roof of the Munich Trade Fair flow once more into the promotion of renewable energy. By 2017, around 85 % of that photovoltaic system belonged to the association. With electricity revenues from the system, the association would like to make an ongoing contribution to the further development and market introduction of renewable energy forms.
