This popular holiday destination on the southern side of the Alps is so much more than a transit route to the Italian interior. South Tyrol is home to many exciting architecture projects that unite history with the future.

Regional challenges

With burgeoning tourism, the small towns of South Tyrol are facing an increasing number of challenges. Therefore, the architecture projects depicted in the book address questions such as: How can architecture create places that are tourist attractions to some and home to others? How can historical existing structures be modernized in a way that is both contemporary and corresponds to qualitative requirements? In their new 200-page book Alpine Architecture in South Tyrol, editors Daniel Reisch and Katinka Temme portray 26 compelling projects that offer answers to these questions. Examples range from a tourism association in Brixen to one of Europe’s highest viewing platforms, the Ötzi Peak.

Historical heritage

The floating platform on the Ötzi Peak, which was designed by *noa Architekten, refers to the site where the world’s oldest glacier mummy was found. Situated on the Schnalstal Glacier at the peak of the Grawand mountain, the architecture frames the surrounding panorama and allows us a look into the past. Along with steep slopes and breathtaking mountain and meadow landscapes, village communities that are steeped in history form the backdrop to the architecture in South Tyrol.

In an interview, Armin and Alexander Pedevilla explain how building methods anchored in regional tradition aid in preserving the unique character of these villages. The South Tyrolese architecture studio Pedevilla Architects promotes using local artisanship to create new interpretations of traditional building methods.

Supplementary essays demonstrate the backgrounds of the projects shown in the book and describe the various influences that characterize South Tyrol. Alpine Architecture in South Tyrol invites readers to discover the fascinating architectural peculiarities of the Alpine region on a visit or even from home.

The book is bilingual in German and English and is now available in bookstores or directly from the Detail Shop.
