Sustainable development
The eighth Sculpteo survey sheds light on the rise of 3D printing: the focus lies on innovation, adaptability and sustainability. In short, 3D printing is gaining ground. Indeed, 41 % of manufacturers explained that it helps them achieve their sustainability goals. They either need less material overall, or they use fewer monomaterials. Moreover, manufacturing with 3D printing involves less expense, thanks for instance to reduced storage requirements.

Finished parts from the printer
Just a few years ago, 3D printing was used primarily for rapid prototyping, spare parts and small-batch production. In the meantime, 18 % of manufacturers use it for mass production, while 28 % use it to produce consumer goods. The growth of 3D printing represents “clear proof of the progress that has been made with reference to technologies, materials and post-processing solutions”. This is why it is increasingly asserting itself in production as well.

Innovation, of course
But what is in store for additive production? An incredible 84 % of respondents expressed optimism about the future, while 58 % were even “very optimistic” that 3D printing will come to play an even greater role in manufacturing, business life and the private sphere. In particular, they emphasized the flexibility and possibility for innovation inherent in the 3D-printing process, which has the potential to fundamentally change the way production is carried out.
